Your desires are the well from which happiness and satisfaction in your career all flow. Once your desires are aligned with your core values, you have what you need for career success. However, in order to align your desires with your core values you need to know what’s most important to you. Ask yourself the following questions, you may be surprised at your answers.
- What do you value most in your career? power, money, accomplishment, fulfillment?
- What do you value most about your direct reports?
- What do you value most about your firm/company?

now has a starting point to begin to emerge, recite your core values and then ask yourself, “is there any disconnect between what I value and what I desire?” If so, it may be time to realign. For example, if you have the desire to make money but one of your core values is to treat all people with dignity and respect, there may be some misalignment and potential for internal conflict which may result in disaster. Keep in mind that it is potentially dangerous to change your core values to meet your
desires. Always adjust your desires to meet your values. Making small adjustments will properly align your psyche and may bring about a break through you’ve been waiting for.
